The open dataset

The atlas is built from open data and gives it back. 16,931 places across 206 countries, with positions, types, source links and photograph credits.

Licences, and why there are two

The facts — names, positions, types, country, the Wikidata identifier — come from Wikidata and are released under CC0. Take them and do as you like.

The photographs are not ours to relicense. Each one lives on Wikimedia Commons under its own terms, and most of those terms require the photographer to be named. So the dataset carries the image URL, the photographer and the licence, and it does not bundle the files themselves. Naming the photographer is a condition of use, not a courtesy.

Quoted descriptions come from Wikidata and are CC0 with the facts.

Files

places.json	Every record, as shipped to the map.

Both are generated on every build, so they never drift from what the chart is actually showing. That drift is a real failure mode: a sibling atlas published a dataset that sat frozen for a month while the live site tripled, and anyone downloading it got a third of the atlas.
